The city of Amsterdam will not uphold the magic mushroom prohibition for now. At the moment, there are too many uncertainties about how that should be done. That is what mayor Job Cohen, the police and the Public Prosecutions Department decided after deliberation on Monday, this is what a local council spokesperson made public.

Dutch Christian Democrat minister of Public Health, Ab Klink, has announced the ban of selling and growing ‘magic mushrooms’, or shrooms, will take place on December 1. This knee-jerk reaction follows a media and political hype caused last year by the suicide of a 17-year old French tourist who was said to be under the influence of mushrooms at that time. It was her second suicide attempt and the first was not on mushrooms (PS: to compare: almost 50% of all suicide attempts is under the influence of alcohol and prescription medicines)

Halve the number of places that sell magic mushrooms, introduce a respite of three days and certify the sales. Amsterdam should get one year to prove the effect of these measures, says the National Smartshop Association (VLOS).

The Dutch press is fully occupied with it: minister Ab Klink of Health wants to ban the magic mushroom this week. He is supported by the parties CDA, VVD and Christian Union. Despite advises of the National Organisation for smartshops, Mayor of Amsterdam Job Cohen and a recent study that concluded that use of magic mushrooms carries very little to no risks.

Mayor Job Cohen of Amsterdam wants people that are about to buy magic mushrooms for the first time in their life to take three days to think their purchase through. Within this term the purchaser can gather information on the hallucinating mushrooms so he can make ‘a more conscious choice’.

Dutch Minister of Public Health Ab Klink (CDA)will decide in two weeks on the legal status of psychoactive mushrooms. That he announced last Thursday.
Klink is considering a minimum age for those who buy them. Also the quantity of shops where mushrooms are available should be reduced. Tourists should be informed on the risks of mushroom (paddo) consumption.
